Western Carolina to experience total eclipse of the moon

Astronomers at PARI (Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute) announce that on the evening of Feb. 20, viewers in the Carolinas will be able to view a total eclipse of the moon.

We will see the entire eclipse from beginning to end, weather permitting.

What causes an eclipse of the moon, also called a lunar eclipse? As the moon orbits the earth, it comes to Full Moon once every 29 1/2 days. Most months when this happens the moon passes above or below the earth’s shadow and we don’t have an eclipse. But twice per year, roughly six months apart, the moon can pass through the earth’s shadow. This is what is happening on the evening of Feb. 20.

Here are the circumstances:

8:05 p.m. EST-Moon starts to enter the penumbra, the lighter, outer part of the Earth’s shadow. We won’t notice much for about 30 minutes.

8:43 p.m. EST-Moon starts to enter the umbra, the dark, inner portion of the Earth’s shadow. We will see a dark notch appear on the eastern edge of the full moon. Partial phases follow.

10 p.m. EST-Moon is completely within the umbra. Total eclipse begins.

10:52 p.m. EST-Moon begins to leave the umbra. Partial phases follow.

12:09 a.m. EST -Moon leaves the umbra. Very subtle shading remains.

12:45 a.m. EST -Moon leaves the penumbra. Eclipse is over.

The times of the eclipse events will not depend on where you are. Realize that when we observe an eclipse of the moon the brightest thing we see is the Full Moon just before or after the eclipse. It is perfectly safe to look at a lunar eclipse with our unprotected eyes.

For more information and a map, see MacRobert, Alan. “Ideal Eclipse of the Moon,” Sky and Telescope, Vol. 115, No. 2, February 2008, pp. 68-71 (available at Highland Books or Mr. Pete’s) or visit http://aa.usno.navy.mil/.

The next total lunar eclipse visible from the Americas will be on the evening of Dec. 20-21, 2010.

For more information, call PARI at 877-6348.

10 Techie Gifts for Your Valentine

Buying flowers and chocolate for Valentine's Day is so, well, conventional. Why not give a gift that lasts, like a stylish portable hard drive or a combo jewelry box/gadget charging station.

For many, Valentine's Day is an opportunity to take time out of their hectic schedules to show appreciation for the one they love. In my opinion, it's a commercialized holiday that pressures men into spending their money on flowers, chocolate, jewelry, lingerie, and perfume—which just happen to be the top five Valentine's Day gift searches on shopping search engine SortPrice.com.

That's not to say that Valentine's Day shouldn't be celebrated. Heck, who's going to turn down a free dinner or present? But instead of going the traditional route, why not spice up your relationship this year with a gift he or she won't expect, such as a stylish portable hard drive or a combo jewelry box/gadget charging station? Unlike flowers or chocolate, they'll last!

To make your shopping experience painless, we've got gift picks for all types: the adventurous, the comedic, the sentimental, and more. But hurry, Valentine's Day is just 3 days away.

For the Pack Rat:
Is your significant other a pack rat, or maybe just an especially organized individual? With the
Iomega eGo 160GB Portable Hard Drive($132.95), your Valentine can store up to 640,000 photos, over 2,900 hours of music, or 240 hours of video in a stylish and compact design. Available in five vibrant colors, the drive has an elegantly curved chassis with chrome endcaps. Simply connect it to an open USB 2.0 port and drag and drop your files onto the drive. Don't worry about accidentally dropping it, because its DropGuard technology protects the eGo from drops of up to 51 inches. Iomega sent me the Flamingo Pink model, and I was able to transfer my 8GB of music and 2GB of digital photos onto the drive from my work computer to my home system with ease. It weighs less than half a pound and measures just 5.25 by 3.5 inches, which is the perfect size to stuff into my purse.

For the Jewelry Lover
With all of that jewelry you buy your wife every year, she must need a way to organize it all. You can help her organize her bling while providing her with a charging station for her cell phone and MP3 player. The
Jewelry Box Charger Stationfeatures a lift-out organizer for jewelry and a full mirror; a bottom compartment holds her gadgets in one location. Measuring 13 by 10 by 6.5 inches, it sells for $59.99 on SkyMall.com.

Pandemic Flu Community Meeting

Henderson County Hosting Public Engagement Meeting
on Pandemic Flu November 17; Seeking Participants from WNC

November 14, 2007 – Henderson County, NC:  Henderson County has been selected as one of five sites in the country to host a public engagement meeting November 17 on the federal government’s goals for the distribution of Pandemic Influenza Vaccine should a pandemic occur in the U.S.

Henderson County public health officials are seeking 100 participants who are representative of all demographics in Western North Carolina to participate in this interactive public engagement meeting from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, November 17, at Trinity Presbyterian Church, . (Registration is open to all WNC residents, not just those living in Henderson County .) Pre-registration is required and registration is limited. Breakfast and lunch will be provided and participants could be compensated with a small stipend for their time. For more information or to register, go to www.hendersoncountync.org/health or register by phone at 1-800-219-6670 ext. 8860.

900 Blythe Street , Hendersonville

“This is a unique opportunity for our community to have a say in how the federal government makes decisions in response to a pandemic flu situation,” said Henderson County Public Health Medical Director Dr. Diana Curran . “We are the only rural community that has been asked to have an opinion--  All the other sites are big cities.”

“Pandemic influenza occurs when there is a major change in the flu virus that is much more infectious than seasonal flu,” said Tom Bridges , Henderson County ’s Public Health Director. The 1918 flu pandemic is one example, where 675,000 died. “We don’t know when another pandemic may occur but the government wants to have a plan in place to prioritize vaccine distribution should one occur and it’s asked our help to gather public input on this plan.”

Linda Weldon, Henderson County Communicable Disease Nurse Supervisor said, “Everyone may be susceptible to pandemic flu—it spreads much quicker, sickens more people, and is a much more serious illness than seasonal flu. And because pandemic flu won’t respond to seasonal flu vaccines, a new vaccine will have to be developed to

protect people. When that vaccine becomes available, the amount that is made each month will be limited. Therefore, a priority list is needed to determine who gets vaccines earlier and who gets vaccines later.”

The federal government has asked five communities in the United States to hold public engagement meetings to gather public input on this prioritization process. Henderson County joins Milwaukee , Wisconsin ; Nassau County , New York ; Washington D.C. and Las Cruses, New Mexico in hosting public engagement meetings.

“It’s really important to get the public involved in this discussion, although it’s hard to get people to discuss such a stark problem before a crisis actually happens,” Bridges said. “It’s important the public is engaged in the conversation and helps make and understand priorities for vaccination should a pandemic occur.”
